Should You Build Your Own Pole Barn Estimating Software?

Building a simple 3D configurator is one project. Maintaining a reliable estimating system for your company's materials, pricing, and construction methods is a much bigger commitment. Here's what to consider before building instead of buying.

What is involved beyond the 3D model?

A usable estimating application needs rules for posts, trusses, framing, roofing, openings, and the exceptions that come with real projects. It also needs price maintenance, saved estimates, user access, and a way to test changes without breaking existing calculations.

What does it cost to maintain?

Development cost depends on the complexity of your buildings, the software team, and the systems you need to connect. Avoid comparing a monthly software subscription only to the cost of creating an initial prototype. Account for ongoing work:

  • Implementing and testing material quantity rules
  • Keeping up with new building options and pricing methods
  • Fixing bugs and supporting staff
  • Security, backups, hosting, and browser updates
  • Training new users and maintaining documentation

Does AI change the calculation?

AI-assisted development can speed up coding and prototyping. It doesn't automatically verify that a truss count, post length, or material list is correct. Someone still needs to define the building rules, test the results, and maintain the system.

When building your own may make sense

Custom software may be reasonable if your process is genuinely unusual, you have a team that can support the application long term, or integration with existing systems is central to your business. Buying may make more sense if the work is common to many post-frame builders and you want to avoid maintaining your own estimating platform.

How to compare build vs. buy

Choose a representative building and list the rules the software must handle. Estimate the cost of developing and maintaining those rules over several years. Then ask vendors to demonstrate the same building, including material quantities and a design change.

GitEstimate has spent more than 10 years working on post-frame estimating software. We offer company-specific estimating with guided setup, as well as a separate 3D-only designer for website inquiries. See our evaluation checklist and comparison guide.
